Is there an NUT Representative in your school?
If not, we need one. School representatives are an important part of the Union’s structure.
At a simplest level, a school rep can be someone who opens the mailings and makes sure information is displayed and distributed. If no one does that in your school it is a small job that can help a lot.
School Representatives who are prepared to do more can:
- Come to annual school representatives training days. Schools are required to release representatives to attend.
- Hold school NUT meetings on important topics.
- Initiate discussion with other school staff on topics like pension changes, academy status, workload and stress, etc.
- Attend Nottingham City NUT meetings.
- Take advantage of training opportunities provided by the NUT.
- Be the first point of contact for members who need help.
More experienced school reps can accompany members who may need support meetings with school leaders or communicate the concerns of members to the head teacher.
As many schools move away from local authority control it is more important than ever for us to have a named person representing the Union in each school.

If so, be assured you will not be left unsupported. You can take on as few or as many of the tasks above and if you are unsure there are always experienced local officers to turn to for help.
