Teacher Mental Health

Recent concerns about the number of teachers experiencing illness due to work-related stress prompted Nottingham NUT to investigate further.  We conducted a survey of members at the end of 2006 and the report ‘Crazy About Work’ was published in February 2007.  You can read it  by clicking the link or document.

We are using the report to seek improved working conditions in negotiations with Nottingham City Council and other employers of our members.  A copy been sent to NUT Representatives in all City Schools. Further copies can be obtained by emailing

secretary@nottingham-city.nut.org.uk

The report has gained national attention and is being circulated to all NUT associations in England and Wales.

John Illingworth - the author of the report, met  Andrew Reid of OFSTED  to discuss the findings in April.  Although, OFSTED shared concerns about work-related stress they took little responsibility  for the impact of their own work in creating unmanageable workload for many teachers.

Requests to meet a Government Minister to discuss the findings of the report have been rejected.

We have made requests for formal negotiations with Nottingham City Council on this important subject .

Finally, more than a year after this request, a meeting between the NUT and officers of the City Council took place on Tuesday 8th April 2008 .

The meeting was productive and helpful.  Notes made by the NUT following the meeting (Not yet confirmed with the City Council) can be seen by clicking here.

National Guidance from the NUT on Tackling Stress can be found here.
